Strengthening the Alabama Chapter of the Sierra Club

Why Do We Need a Petition for a General Sierra Club Meeting in Alabama?

The Alabama Chapter of the Sierra Club is at a critical juncture. Despite the urgent environmental challenges facing our state such as polluted waterways, industrial contamination, loss of natural habitats, and lack of investment in sustainable development, the Chapter has been unable to establish active campaigns or recruit sufficient volunteers to address these issues effectively. A key barrier has been the lack of transparency and inclusivity in the Chapter’s governance, with many committees and groups holding closed meetings that exclude new volunteers. To break this cycle and build the capacity needed to protect Alabama’s environment, we are calling for a general membership meeting. This meeting will provide an opportunity for members to come together, discuss the Chapter’s challenges, and develop strategies to recruit volunteers, establish campaigns, and attract support from Sierra Club’s National leadership. By signing this petition, you are helping to create a more open, democratic, and effective Chapter that can tackle Alabama’s most pressing environmental issues.

What Is the Sierra Club’s Current Status in Alabama?

The Sierra Club, founded in 1892, is one of the oldest, largest, and most influential environmental organizations in the United States. Its mission is to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; and to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment. What sets the Sierra Club apart is its unique democratic structure and grassroots leadership model. The organization elects its National Board of Directors, State Executive Committees, and the leadership of local Groups, making it one of the most inclusive, resilient, and member-driven environmental organizations in the country.

This democratic structure empowers members to take an active role in shaping the Sierra Club’s priorities and campaigns. It is this volunteer leadership that has enabled the Sierra Club to achieve significant victories for the environment, from protecting public lands to advancing clean energy policies. Most Sierra Club chapters across the country are vibrant hubs of activity, with active campaigns, robust volunteer leadership, and dedicated staff working to protect the environment and advocate for sustainability. These chapters tackle pressing issues such as climate change, air pollution, conservation of land, water quality, and environmental justice, often achieving meaningful change for their communities.

Unfortunately, the Alabama Chapter has struggled to maintain this level of engagement and effectiveness. Despite Alabama’s urgent environmental challenges including pollution in our waters, industrial contamination in our communities, degradation of our natural beauty, and a lack of investment in sustainable development, the Chapter has been unable to establish active campaigns or recruit sufficient volunteers to fill baseline leadership roles. This lack of capacity has left the Chapter unable to address these critical issues effectively.

A key barrier to progress has been the lack of volunteer engagement and inclusion. Many of the Chapter’s committees and groups have held closed meetings, preventing opportunities for new volunteers to participate and contribute. This has created a cycle where the Chapter struggles to attract and retain volunteers, further limiting its ability to build the capacity needed to launch campaigns and advocate for change.

However, there is hope. By convening a general membership meeting, we can create the much-needed opportunity for volunteer engagement and growth. This meeting would allow members to come together, discuss the Chapter’s challenges, and develop strategies to recruit and empower volunteers. It would also demonstrate to Sierra Club’s National leadership that the Alabama Chapter is committed to building a strong foundation for environmental advocacy. National leadership has expressed interest in providing baseline staffing and resources to chapters that show the potential for growth and impact. By taking this step, we can attract the support needed to establish the infrastructure for effective campaigns and programs.

This campaign is about more than just addressing the immediate challenges facing the Alabama Chapter. It’s about building a brighter future for Alabama’s environment and communities. By fostering transparency, inclusivity, and volunteer engagement, we can create a Chapter that is equipped to tackle the urgent environmental issues facing our state and ensure that Alabama’s natural beauty and public health are protected for generations to come.

The Sierra Club’s strength lies in its members. It is essential for us to step up and initiate a grassroots democratic process to activate the Sierra Club’s presence in Alabama. Together, we can build a Chapter that reflects the values of the Sierra Club and makes a lasting impact on our state’s environment and communities.
